Anno 1800 review: a pretty postcard from the Industrial Revolution

Anno 1800 review

Being able to communicate in real time with one of the other inhabitants of your Anno 1800 game also leads to moments like my coordinated effort with a friend to attack an aggressive colonist with our individual fleet of ships. Honestly, if you enjoy City Builders, you will enjoy Anno 1800. This is really where the game really differs from just being in an alliance. Similarly, things threaten to get out of control as your industry develops. Which means you need to move all your ugly factories away.

That said, hardcore players that opt to play through the campaign will likely find it to be too hand-holding for their tastes, meanwhile newcomers will doubtlessly walk away still confused about what they're persistently doing wrong. After so many fast and furious games that demand constant attention, Anno for me has been a relaxing change of pace. Letting players loose to forge their own way in a world of unfettered capitalism, longtime series steward Blue Byte's latest entry brings a select mix of old and new to Anno 1800, and the end result is the most compelling game that the Ubisoft studio has produced in a decade. It may not be the best point of entry for those inexperienced with the genre, but those willing to keep at it are sure to find in it the same intoxicating appeal that will keep Anno fans who have been waiting for the franchise to return to its roots busy with the game for years to come. Once in Cape Trelawny, however, you are welcomed with a massive continent. Whoops how did this screenshot from Sausage Trader 2000 get in this article? This is very important in a sandbox game which you will be spending many hours with.

Anno 1800 review

By working with the same resources in co-op, I was able to use my strengths by maintaining and expanding the islands while Matt took over trading and pirate fighting. Speaking of settling tropical islands, I suppose I should mention my deepest point of unease with this game. One that should absolutely be played by any and all city builder fans. This typical misstep aside, Anno 1800 is an otherwise excellent history-themed simulator that excels at drawing players into its satisfying gameplay loop and keeping them there. Zoomed out, when looking at large undisturbed bodies, the water is beautiful. Does Co-Op offer new challenges? These all play as one would expect, with the sandbox unleashing players onto the world to reshape it as they see fit, the campaign consisting of a series of goal-oriented tutorials masked in a rags-to riches plot that ultimately evolves into the sandbox mode, and multiplayer pitting players against one another in a race to be the first to dominate the game world.

Anno 1800 review

How did you adjust your playing strategy when working together? You get a housing grid and a market set up, a timber industry to allow for more construction, and then you work on fish to feed your settlers, and wool to clothe them. As soon as the expedition unlocks, you are told of unknown glories to be found in a brand-new continent called Cape Trelawny. However, players that make it out of the early game through trial and error will discover just how far down the rabbit hole goes when wrestling with the many heads of the commercial beast that they've created along the way. Some aggressively expand with no concern for who their journey impacts, while others reach out to you when seeking out new land to break ground on. A tale of familial betrayal and revenge following the death of the player character's father, the campaign shepherds the player on their journey to pick up the game's key mechanics.

No, seriously, she laughed at me. The gameplay mechanics really pulled me in. Similar to 's citizenry, every denizen of Anno's world is fully simulated and to a lesser extent distinct, meaning that what pleases one group may do little to address the needs and demands others. It introduces a huge new quest, new things to build, and a massive new continent to settle. The Anno series is all about setting, and it's here where this year's offering also shines.

Review: Anno 1800

Anno 1800 review

Having one person run the entire New World and another run entire Old World allows for better management and easier time since no one really has to flip back and forth between regions. However, before you even find out about the titular treasures and the means to find them, a massive quest awaits you. So when I saw an opportunity to look at Anno 1800 I had to jump at it. Finally, if the game seems overly frenetic to a new player such as me… well, good? Expeditions allow players to send crews of specialists across the globe as they seek fame and fortune, while the new workforce feature makes managing your factories more demanding and realistic than ever. What does Anno 1800 Co-Op add to the game? It is up to you to dodge pirates, sneak past threats, and ultimately, make it to Cape Trelawny — all carried out via fashionable little dialogue options. Some of those additions may be a little off, but in overall this may be the strongest classic Anno title yet.

Victory conditions, opponents… if you can name it, you can customise it. Trade can make or break your efforts, so diplomacy is key. There is one noticeable graphical miss regarding the water. Amusing at first, the peculiar expression and occasional outright innuendo gets old fast. It was the best kind of sequel that any fan could ask for, and it brought with it hundreds of hours of gameplay that felt new, while also familiar to anyone who had previously played an Anno title.
